Country: Brazil mid-1970s
Study Title: 24 horas do Dia de um Carioca. Rio de Janeiro
Collector: Amaury de Souza
When Conducted: The dates of collection are not recorded in the surviving documentation
Sampling Method and Study Design: Amaury de Souza adapted the 1972 Szalai survey to collect a sample in Rio de Janeiro. The diary structure and code frame followed the Szalai guidelines, though this survey modified the code list to collapse to 38 activities. The survey sampled regions, then blocks, then a household, and selected one diarist aged between 18 and 65 in sampled households. Non-respondents were replaced, and the final sample closely approximated the Census characteristics of the city. Where diarists were more literate, the diaries were left behind for the diarist to complete on the day of the activity. For less literate diarists, and interviewer completed the diary with the diarist about the previous 24 hours. The two modes of collection did not produce markedly different results
Sample Size: 255 individuals
