Country: BELGIUM 1998-2000
Study Title: Belgian Time Use Survey
Collector: NIS-INS (National Institute for Statistics)
When Conducted: 3 December 1998 to 6 February 2000
Sampling Method and Study Design: This survey was conducted in conjunction with the Belgian Household Budget Survey. People living in household selected to participate in the HBS were also asked to complete time diaries. Apart from the link to the HBS (which generated some sampling variations from stand alone time use surveys conducted following the Eurostat guidelines), the Belgian Time Use Survey followed the Harmonised European Time Use methodology. All household members aged 12+ were asked to keep two diaries, one on a week day and one on a weekend day. Diaries recorded activities in their own words in 10 minute time slots. Diary instruments and questinnaires were distributed in Dutch and French, and people could complete their diaries in either language. Diarists were asked to note what form of transport they used when travelling, who else was present, and any secondary activities simultaneous to main activities. In practice, low recording of the secondary activities meant that this information was not used to create the final data files. In the data file, activities are coded in 271 categories. Vakgroep Sociologie-Onderzoeksgroep TOR (the Free University of Brussels) processed the raw data and performed initial file construction and data analysis for the National Institute for Statistics
Sample Size: 8,382 individuals aged 12 to 95 years old in 4,275 families
Response Rate: 6%
Weighting Procedures: The data are weighted for each region (Brussels, Flanders and Wallonia) for the variables sex, age, education level and code month
