Country: AUSTRALIA 1974a
Study Title: Australians' Use of Time, Albury-Wodonga and Melbourne, 1974
Collector: Cities Commission funded and oversaw the design in collaboration with The Australian National University, which eventually held and processed the data. McNair Anderson Associates Pty Ltd conducted the interviews and performed initial data production
When Conducted: March-September 1974
Sampling Method and Study Design: The study modelled the sample on the Szalai Multinational Time Budget project, and drew a probability sample of Census collectors' districts in two urban areas, 90 in Albury-Wodonga and 97 in Melbourne. Within each sampled area, a random sample of 14 occupied dwellings was drawn. If the house included people aged 18-69, one random person in this age range was asked to complete one 24-hour diary. If the requested respondent did not participate, the study did not replace the non-respondent. Interviewers met face to face with the diarist two days prior to the diary day to conduct the household and person-level questionnaires, explain the diary, then leave the diary behind. The interviewer returned to collect the diary up to two days after the diary day. The diaries were initially piloted in Sydney before use in the main survey. Diaries collected the start and stop time of activities, main and secondary activities, mode of transport and distance travelled, a separate location column, and two columns to record up to two others present. The questionnaire additionally covered access to technology at home as well as significant affect and satisfaction data
Sample Size: 715 diaries from Melbourne, 547 from Albury, 229 from Wodonga (1491 diaries in total)
Response Rate: 67% in Albury-Wodonga; 58% in Melbourne
Weighting Procedures: Weights both corrected for sample distribution errors and inflated to the size of the total population at the time
