Future Aims of the Study
As of October 2006, we are still waiting for comments from the review process of the creation of this
dataset. After we receive this feedback, we will make some adjustments to this dataset, which will include
the following minor additions as well as corrections. THe next release likely will be at some time in 2007.
-
1975-76 - we have made some amendments to the definition of low quality diaries which we have
zero-weighted before this release. We will be redoing the attrition weights for this dataset, which may
produce some modest changes to the existing weights. Also, we are hopeful of being able to locate the
original variable occupation codes for this survey, and if we can locate them, then we shall create the
occupation variable (occup) for this dataset. At present, occupation only is available for 1965-66 and
2003
-
1985 - we have only used the mail-back diaries in the AHTUS files as episode level data only remains
accessible for this sample. Nevertheless, many people have published research using the summary of main
activity information for all three samples. We are in the process of making a summary file for the three
samples in the AHTUS format. In addition, the 1985 study collected data from household members aged 10
and above. Previous published work has excluded diarists aged less than 18. At this time, we have only
recovered household level information to accompany the youth diaries, but we plan to put what ever additional
information and these diaries on this site at the same time that we release the summary file.
-
STATA - we plan to make all data files available in STATA as well SPSS at a future point.
We are considering adding the following surveys in future releases of the AHTUS:
- 2004, 2005, 2006 - subsequent years of the American Time Use Survey (ATUS)
- 1999-2001 National Survey of Parents (NSP)
- 1998-1999 Family Interaction, Social Capital, and Trends in Time Use Study (FISCT)
- 1995 National Human Activity Pattern Survey (NHAPS) additional sample survey
